Self Development of the People (SDOP) partners with economically disadvantaged, oppressed, and impoverished individuals to empower them through grant funding, enabling them to achieve self-sufficiency and to alter the conditions that perpetuate poverty, oppression, and injustice. In the Bay Area, the SDOP chapter consists of three geographic organizations, called Presbyteries, of Presbyterian churches: the Presbytery of San Jose, the Presbytery of San Francisco, and the Presbytery of the Redwoods.
To be considered for a grant, all applicants, whether groups or individuals, must adhere to the following criteria:
- Be presented, owned, and managed by the economically disadvantaged individuals who will directly benefit from them.
- Address the long-term correction of conditions that perpetuate poverty and oppression. This should incorporate SDOP’s core strategies to promote justice, build solidarity, advance human dignity, and advocate for economic equity.
- Demonstrate environmental sensitivity while achieving their stated goals and objectives.
Not promote or advocate violence as a means of achieving goals and objectives.
